在2005 E3大展中，新一代第三人称策略动作游戏战争机器（Gear of War）吸引了众多人的眼球，更被欧美媒体惊呼为XBOX 360第一大作。这款游戏由开发出知名 3D 游戏引擎‘UnrealEngine3'的 Epic Games 所制作，使用的正是该公司最引以为傲的 UnrealEngine3。这个 3D 游戏引擎整合了新一代 3D 图形处理晶片的高阶图形处理能力，以及 AGEIA 提供的物理模拟技术，所能呈现的画面效果以及互动性可说是目前顶级的表现，是两大新主机平台厂商SCE与微软都极力争取的对象。日前，国外网站放出了该做的最新游戏截图，这些效果惊人的截图让人无法不对这款XBOX 360大作期待不已。
使用了 UnrealEngine3 的《Gear of War》，同样也充分发挥了这个游戏引擎的长处，搭配上 XBOX 360 主机大幅革新的硬体，表现出远超越现有游戏的水准。游戏故事叙述未来世界的人类与地底种族罗卡斯之间的生存之战。游戏的类型并非常见的第一人称射击游戏，而是采取背后视点的第三人称策略动作游戏，能更清楚的显示出玩家所操作角色的一举一动，与环境的互动也更为生动丰富。
《Gear of War》光影部分的表现同样也非常精采，所有的角色都有着自我投射的阴影效果，以及高动态的光影处理，当经过窗户或遮蔽物时就能清楚的察觉到阳光或阴影投射在角色身上的局部光影效果，这些都是以往游戏未能完美呈现的部分，但在《Gear of War》中都有相当精采的演出。加上 XBOX 360 所有游戏都具备的 720p（1280 x 720）高解析度输出以及反锯齿处理（Anti-Alias），带给玩家高水准的视觉飨宴。
游戏的操作方式也非常的生动，由于是以第三人称的方式来操作，故可以清楚的掌握玩家角色的方位，更容易进行各种进阶的行动，像是闪躲、翻滚、掩蔽等，还可以完全躲在障碍物之后，只把枪口伸出对外进行盲目射击，有着如同电影演出般的爽快操作。游戏中必须时时利用丰富的地形地务来掩蔽自己，避免暴露于敌方的火线之下，而这些地形地物并非静态的，而是会随着敌我双方的行动而改变，例如可以将梁柱轰倒，来制造出新的掩蔽物，这些掩蔽物也会因为火力的打击而逐渐损坏。
与队友的合作也是游戏的一大关键，即使主角是厉害的战争英雄，但身躯仍是血肉，面对敌方强大的火力之下，单打独斗也很难有胜算可言，故与伙伴之间的相互支援非常重要。游戏中除玩家角色之外的我方队员以及敌方角色都有着高度的人工智慧表现，会伺机移动、有效率地执行命令、必要时也会自动寻求掩护并自我防卫，玩家将可以体验到比以往更加丰富的合作战斗。
游戏将以每 15～20 分钟的周期来安排每次的战斗事件，故事剧情的进展以及关卡的行进路线都会有各种不同的分歧，游戏的每一轮回约有 10 个小时的分量。除了战斗之外也有许多临场机智的解谜，例如将废弃的车辆点火，推下斜坡来突围并充当动态的掩体，或者是攻击加油站来引爆歼敌等。剧情的演出部分也会使用唇形同步的技术，来呈现更自然生动的语音演出效果。结合紧凑的战斗、机智的解谜以及生动的剧情演出，充分表达出游戏中的末日战争气氛。
游戏的多人连线部分也是非常受到瞩目的一环，目前游戏中规划了双人合作模式，当玩家在进行单人游戏时，另一名线上玩家可以随时加入，合作过关。现阶段仅能提供最多双人的合作过关，将来预定会提供更多人的合作模式，让玩家除了能与人工智慧伙伴一同战斗之外，也能与真实的玩家合作过关。而在其他的多人连线功能方面，预定会有排行榜、对战模式跟附加内容下载等，详情尚待后续公布。
《Gear of War》可说是一款真正能让玩家感受到新世代游戏表现的作品，也展现了 Epic Games 在游戏引擎的开发以及游戏内容的制作方面深厚的实力，值得玩家期待。
